Michael J. (Mike) Kowalczyk, 56, of Houston, TX passed away on Friday, November 3, 2017. Born July 30, 1961, to Carolyn M. Wysocki and the late Leo J. Kowalczyk, Mike grew up in Berlin, CT, enjoyed fishing and many outdoor sports over the years. He attended Vermont Academy, and after graduating from Berlin High School, honed his skills as a cabinet maker, then repairing pinball machines, before striking out on his own as an entrepreneur in Texas, first in real estate and computer services, then founding Display IDEAS, combining his woodworking and computer skills to create custom displays and engravings. Michael belonged to several tradesmen organizations, and was president of a homeowners association where he was instrumental in saving a children's playground.
Michael was an active member of Congregation Beth Messiah in Texas, and was involved in its construction. He was a teacher, mentor, and participated in the Bible study group. He was proud of his Polish Heritage, and, if you had a birthday, he would ask if he could sing Sto Lat as his gift to you (a traditional Polish song expressing good wishes, good health and long life). Mike felt tremendous joy as an instigator of random acts of kindness. Whether leaving flowers anonymously for an appreciated waitress, or inviting a young child to play tic tac toe, then gifting them with the game he had crafted, he enjoyed making others smile and feel special.
After hurricane Harvey flooded his car, business and apartment, Michael started rebuilding his life from scratch. He had bought a car, got a job, and was working on an apartment when he had a major stroke and several small ones. Then the Lord called him home, and he rests now in peace and love.
Michael is survived by his daughter, Anne Akehurst and husband Keith, and granddaughter Evelyn, of Chicago, IL; his mother, Carolyn Wysocki, of Berlin, CT; his brother, David Kowalczyk, of Spring, TX; sister Karen A. Brunette and husband Guy, of Glastonbury, CT, and sister Diane B. Kowalczyk, of Avon, CT, as well as aunt and uncle Joan and Norman Chasse, of Novi, MI. He is also survived by niece Kayce, nephews Michael, Trevor and Thomas, and several cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank the Congregation Beth Messiah Family, who had been a tremendous help with preparing Michael for rest. Special thanks to Ana Chavez and family for their love and support, especially during recovery from hurricane Harvey.
A beautiful service was held for Michael in Texas at Congregation Beth Messiah on Friday, November 10th, attended by family and friends.
In Connecticut, a "Celebration of Michael's Life" Open House was held on December 2 at 531 Toll Gate Road, Berlin, CT. Everyone wore purple, Mike's favorite color.
